Phil Mickelson 2004 Masters Champion Phil Mickelson celebrates his birdie putt on the 18th hole to win the Masters Golf Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club 11 April 2004 in Augusta, GA. Mickelson, long stuck with the tag of being the best golfer never to win a major championship, finished 72 holes at nine-under par 279 to edge South Africa's Ernie Els by one stroke. Mickelson etched a spot for himself in Masters history when he shot 31 on the back nine - the lowest final round back nine by a winner since Jack Nicklaus shot 30 in 1986.
